The pay at Cigna was great for a first co-op and the convenient location in Liberty Place was even better.

However, the job description I was given was pretty misleading and I could never really get into my job fully (it was more suited for a CS major than business I think). Eventually I just became a dumping ground for every time-consuming project that people on my team didn't want to do themselves. If you are interested in the insurance industry at all as a future profession it would be a great job. But since i'm not interested in insurance, it could be mind-numbingly boring and monotonous much of the time.

Also, it is hard motivating yourself to work in such a large corporation. You do not see the results of your projects reflected in the performance of the company as a whole. There are no real end-goals to work towards or any visible rewards. You work in the bubble of your department and maybe a couple other departments on joint projects.

The work environment at Cigna is EXTREMELY conservative. The insurance industry in itself is rather depressing most of the time. Stepping in the door it feels like a place devoid of fun, happiness, and free thought. It can be pretty draining after a while. You feel like a peon stuck somewhere on the Corporate ladder. Its the kind of place where you'd spend 20 years in a cube only to work your way up to some thankless middle-management position. A lot of wasted talent in that place to be honest.

People generally do not leave their cubicles unless 100% necessary. Its not a place where you can speak openly to most co-workers. Also watch what you wear (I was scolded once because my jeans on casual friday were "too casual"). Be prepared for plenty of awkward department birthday parties/baby showers. Its pretty much like that movie Office Space only not so hilarious.

Plan well in advance if you want to take some time off. Flexibility doesn't really exist at Cigna and employees generally have to work years before they build enough time for a vacation.

Most of the time, my boss who worked in the cubicle adjacent to me would only talk to me via email. She always looked shocked when I would actually get up and physically ask her a question over the wall. This was the case with most of the department.

On the other hand, it was good experience of the stereotypical corporate world and gave me an example of the type of place I would not want to end up in after graduation. Not the worst co-op but just not for me. I prefer to be able to shoot the shit with my boss and feel like theres actually some end goal to accomplish in my job.

The job itself was quite decent. Good exposure to various aspects of the organization, challenging, and opportunities for advancement.

The environment, however, was abysmal. Soul Sucking. Employees stick to their cubes and speak only when necessary. Maybe good for the stereotypical CS major, awful for anyone that enjoys interacting with their fellow man.

CIGNA is a great company to work for, at least in my experience. I've been able to work from home on occasion and they've kept me on for 2 years (2 co-ops and working part time). The pay is very competitive, compared with other co-ops. My managers have been great and my coworkers have become great friends.

The experience is, as with any co-op, what you make it.

Every day felt like my soul was being worn away. I stayed in my box and people didn't really talk to me or to each other. I didn't learn much of anything, even though my boss was a sweetheart. If you are anti-social, then this is the place for you. If you have a soul, look elsewhere.
